Valuable Practice Tips for Parents
- Don’t make practice an option. Ask your child questions like ” Would you like to start with your review piece from last week or your new piece?” This gives them the chance to make a choice about HOW they will practice instead of IF they will practice.
- Keep practice sessions short if your child is tired or has a lot of homework.
- Even if it is for a short amount of time, this sets a good example because it shows them that you think practice is just as important as homework.
- If your child is struggling with their piece, make sure to have them play a little at a time. If you tackle the whole piece, this may make it seem overwhelming. Playing a few measures at a time is a good way to achieve small goals and make things easier to understand.
- Show your child that YOU think practicing is very important. If they see that their parents think highly of music education, they will follow.
