Practice Tips

Find interesting practice tips and mini lessons that you or your child can work on during the week in addition to the assignment that your music teachers have written.

You will also find important skills, like how to tune your guitar, how to set up your drum set, or how to do a quick vocal warm up. When you are a student at the Mike Risko Music School, we are always here to guide you through a musical day!

If you have questions about your exercises, get in touch and we can help you through it.

Valuable Practice Tips for Parents

  • Don’t make practice an option. Ask your child questions like ” Would you like to start with your review piece from last week or your new piece?” This gives them the chance to make a choice about HOW they will practice instead of IF they will practice.
  • Keep practice sessions short if your child is tired or has a lot of homework.
  • Even if it is for a short amount of time, this sets a good example because it shows them that you think practice is just as important as homework.
  • If your child is struggling with their piece, make sure to have them play a little at a time. If you tackle the whole piece, this may make it seem overwhelming. Playing a few measures at a time is a good way to achieve small goals and make things easier to understand.
  • Show your child that YOU think practicing is very important. If they see that their parents think highly of music education, they will follow.
