Breathing Exercises for Vocal Training

Breathing Exercises

Here are a few variations of breathing exercises that you can do to help strengthen your lungs.

Basic Breathing Exercise

The Inhale:
Take a good singing breath. Make sure it is a deep, low breath while imagining your tummy is a balloon filling with air. Go slowly imagining that you are filling that balloon with air. When the balloon is full, you will begin to exhale slowly through your mouth.

The Exhale:
Be careful not to let your muscles tighten. Do not force the air out, let it seep out as though you are slowly letting a balloon deflate.

Do these exercises 5 times each.

Snake Breathing

Inhale slowly through the nose and then exhale slowly through the mouth while making a hissing (sssss) sound.

Try to allow yourself to exhale for 30 seconds or longer. The more you practice, the longer you’ll be able to last!

Do this exercise 3 times each.

Candle Breathing

Take a good singing breath (refer to the Basic Breathing Exercise above). Imagine that you are facing a cake with 10 candles on it and blow each candle out one by one. Take a small pause between each candle.

Do this exercise 2 times.
